Pregnancy Must - Haves in the First Trimester

Ah, the first trimester! A time of joy, excitement, and let’s be honest... sheer chaos. From googling “is it normal to cry over a sandwich?” to falling asleep during your favorite Netflix show, those early weeks are a whirlwind of emotions, cravings, and yes, nausea.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed (and a lot bloated), don’t worry—you’re not alone. Grab your ginger tea, prop up your feet, and let’s talk about some must-haves to help you navigate the first trimester.

1. Ginger Everything!!!!

Ginger tea, ginger chews, ginger biscuits—ginger is your new best friend. If morning sickness (which, let’s face it, should really be called “all-day sickness”) has you feeling green, ginger can work wonders to settle your stomach. Pro tip: Keep some ginger chews in your bag for those moments when a whiff of someone’s lunch hits you unexpectedly

2. A Water Bottle That You Love

Hydration is key, but drinking water when you’re feeling queasy? Not fun. Make it easier by treating yourself to a fancy water bottle. Get one with a straw or spout (because tilting your head back is just too much effort some days) and maybe even one that tells you how much water you’ve had. Bonus points if it’s pretty enough to distract you from the fact you now need to pee all the time!.

3. Comfy Bras (Goodbye Underwire!)

Oh, hello, tender boobs! Your pre-pregnancy bras are probably starting to feel like medieval torture devices, so it’s time to embrace stretchy, wireless bras or bralettes. Comfort is the name of the game here—because if your body is going to feel like a science experiment, your bra should at least feel like a hug.

4. Snacks. All the Snacks.

Feeling nauseous? Eat a snack. Feeling tired? Snack. Just cried over a puppy video? Snack again. Crackers, nuts, dried fruit, toast—whatever works for you. Keep snacks in your bag, on your bedside table, and basically in any room of the house. Think of it as emergency fuel for you and your growing baby.

5. Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are non-negotiable, but let’s be real—some of them are massive enough to double as a doorstop. If you’re struggling, ask your doctor about chewable or gummy versions. Pro tip: Taking them with food (or at night) can help avoid the dreaded vitamin-induced nausea.

6. A Pregnancy App That Feels Like Your BFF

Want to know what’s going on in there without having to Google everything? Download a pregnancy app. From telling you that your baby is now the size of a blueberry to giving you tips on managing early symptoms, these apps can be both informative and reassuring. Plus, you’ll love saying, “This week, my baby is a raspberry!”

7. Naps and Netflix

Your energy levels in the first trimester? About as reliable as the weather in March. Some days, you’ll feel fine, and others, you’ll need a nap at 11 a.m. Listen to your body! Cozy up with a soft blanket, binge-watch your favorite feel-good show, and let yourself rest. Growing a human is exhausting work!

8. A Sense of Humor

Pregnancy is full of surprises, like crying because someone ate the last pickle or feeling like you’ve run a marathon after walking up the stairs. Laugh about it! Share the funny, awkward moments with your partner or friends—they’ll make for great stories one day.

9. A Support Squad

Whether it’s your partner, a close friend, or an online community, having people to lean on is a lifesaver. You need someone you can text at 3 a.m. with, “Is it normal to want lasagna *and* ice cream for breakfast?” or “I just cried over a dog food commercial, send help.”

10. Elastic Waistbands

You may not be showing yet, but bloating doesn’t care. Leggings, joggers, and anything with an elastic waistband will quickly become your go-to. Who needs zippers anyway?

The first trimester is messy, magical, and occasionally maddening—but you’ve got this!

Stock up on your must-haves, give yourself all the grace in the world, and remember: it’s okay to feel all the feelings (yes, even the irrational ones).

Before you know it, you’ll be entering the second trimester and celebrating with a slightly less queasy smile.

What were (or are) your first-trimester essentials?
